Brasil Guitar Duo

Guitar duo blends traditional and Brazilian works

Photo of the Brasil Guitar DuoOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Brasil Guitar Duo, recognized for its "maturity of musicianship and technical virtuosity," will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College.

Tickets, which are $33 and $23, are available through the college box office at 913-469-4445 or online at Paul Laird, musicologist, will give a pre-concert talk starting at 7 p.m. in Recital Hall.

Their program will include works by Mario Casteinuovo-Tedesco, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer, as well as some original compositions.

Duo members João Luiz and Douglas Lora met in São Paulo as teenage guitar students and have been performing together for more than 15 years. Their innovative programming features a seamless blend of traditional and Brazilian works as they are equally at home with classical or World music.

"The maturity of musicianship and the technical virtuosity simply outstanding," the Classical Guitar Magazine has stated.

The duo has appeared internationally on major concert series and at festivals in Germany, England, South Korea, Colombia, Brazil, Austria, Panama, Poland and Bermuda. Its U.S. engagements have included recitals in New York, Miami, Houston and St. Louis.

In 2006, the two won the Concert Artists Guild International Competition.

They also have won praise for their latest CD, released on the Avie label. It is collaboration with flutist Marina Piccinini and it features all of Bach's sonatas for flute and harpsichord, as arranged by the duo for flute and two guitars.
