OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Model United Nations team from Johnson County Community College received an Outstanding Delegation Award, Delegates’ Choice Award and three honorable mention awards Feb. 19-20 in St. Louis, Mo.

At the St. Louis Union Station, the team portrayed Canada and New Zealand for the 2014 Midwest Model United Nations Conference

Team members Aaron Swift, Olathe, Bennett Hofer, Olathe, and Ian Sneid, Leawood, were recognized for their work on the General Assembly Disarmament Committee.

Jeffery Redmond, Olathe, gained attention for his performance in the General Assembly Economic and Financial Committee, and Marie-Kistin Horvat, Lingen, Germany and Lenexa, and Nathaly Cifuentes, Bogota, Colombia and Merriam, were recognized for their work on the Economic and Social Council.

In addition, the team received recognition for diplomatic skills at the General Assembly Plenary session.

Three JCCC team members were chosen by the conference for staff positions, including:

  • Mayra Ferman, Kansas City, Kan., co-chair of the General Assembly Finance Committee
  • Kaitlyn Sylva, Gardner, co-chair of the Food and Agricultural Organization
  • Gaelyn McGhee, Shawnee, co-chair of the General Assembly Disarmament Committee.

Team member Grace Kamotho, Overland Park, described the Midwest Model United Nations Conference as “an awesome learning experience with such dedication, commitment and loads of hard work – so we can experience the conference and all that goes into being a UN delegate.”

This latest conference builds on 12 years of success for JCCC, during which the team has received awards at each of the last thirty-six conferences it has attended.

Team adviser is Dr. Brian Wright, Overland Park. Wright is also the president for the board of directors of UNA USA-Kansas City organization and the secretary for the board of directors at the Midwest Model United Nations in St. Louis.

The JCCC Model UN team will next attend the National Model United Nations and Leadership Conference in New York City, held at the United Nations in April. JCCC will represent the country of Niger.
