With regional win, JCCC culinary team heads to national competition

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Johnson County Community College culinary team cooked up a win in Saint Louis on March 18 and is headed to the culinary version of the final four in July.

The team won a gold medal and top honors at the American Culinary Federation Central Region competition held in St Louis, competing against teams from nine states. That qualifies the JCCC team to compete against three other regional winners at the national ACF competition to be held July 24 to 29 in Kansas City.

Team members are Jessica Seely and Katie O’Connor, Overland Park; Matt Phillips, Hillsboro, Kan.; Stephan Horsch and Raquel Kramer, Kansas City, Mo. Coaches are Edward Adel, Lee’s Summit, JCCC assistant professor of hospitality management, and Felix Sturmer, Overland Park, professor of hospitality management.

In the competition, the students demonstrated their knife and basic food preparation abilities in a skills segment; prepared a cold plate for eight and a three-course meal for four in 75 minutes.
