W. Basketball – No. 4 JCCC gets big road win over No. 9 KCK

Juanita RobinsonOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – No. 4 ranked Johnson County Community College was able to overcome a poor shooting effort in the first half and pull out a key road victory over No. 9 ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College, Wednesday night, 68-53. 

Johnson County hit just 2-of-16 3-point attempts in the first half, but managed to dial in during the second half, hitting 5-of-11 long-range shots. Two by Juanita Robinson and one by Timeka O’Neal helped the Lady Cavaliers break a 33-33 tie into a 42-34 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. 

Robinson led all scores with 19 points, hitting 6-of-10 shots, including 4-of-7 3-pointers. Freshman Nieka Wheeler followed 18 points, 10 from the field and eight at the line, and O’Neal added 16. 

The Lady Blue Devils did pull within five points with about four minutes remaining, but Robinson again nailed two treys, giving JCCC a comfortable 11-point advantage. The Lady Cavaliers managed to secure the victory at the line in the final minutes. 

Cassidy Harbert led KCKCC with 15 points, seven assists and four steals, and Rashaun Casey followed with 12 points. 

Johnson County (25-1) will host Hesston College (13-13), Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lady Cavaliers downed the Larks by 58 points in their earlier meeting this season on Jan. 25, in Hesston, 89-31.
