W. Basketball – JCCC no longer perfect

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County sophomore guard Juanita Robinson had a shot to send the game into overtime, but her attempt at the buzzer was just off the mark, and the No. 1 Lady Cavaliers lost for the first time this season, falling to No. 5 Highland, 71-68 at JCCC Gymnasium, Wednesday night. The loss also snapped JCCC’s 46-game home court winning streak.

The Lady Cavaliers came out hot, knocking down its first five attempts, but after that opening run, JCCC hit just 6-of-25 the rest of the first half, and trailed by four at the break.

Robinson was Johnson County’s top offensive player with 20 points, hitting 8-of-15 shots, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore Sameia Kendall followed with 11, and Nieka Wheeler and Taylor McDowell added nine and eight respectively. Sophomore forward Kariel Hutt was the game’s top rebounder with 15.

Highland guard Ashley Torres proved to be a tough matchup for Johnson County. She was able to attack the basket, ending up with either a layup or a trip to the free throw line. Torres was 7-of-13 from the field, and 10-of-11 from the line, finishing with a game-high 24 points. She also tied for her team’s lead in rebounds with six. Center Julia Alves followed with 12 points and six boards.

These two NJCAA Division II powerhouses will meet again Feb. 19, in Highland, but Johnson County other business to attend to before the rematch. The Lady Cavaliers hit the road for two games this week. They go to Fort Scott on Sat., Feb. 1, and to Salina to face Brown Mackie, Wed., Feb. 5. JCCC returns home Sat., Feb. 8, to host State Fair Community College, one of four remaining home games this season.
