OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The multi-event portion of the of the Jayhawk Conference/Region VI Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded Thursday at the JCCC Fieldhouse with JCCC athletes winning the men’s heptathlon and women’s pentathlon. This is the first time in team history a JCCC male and female athlete won in the same year.

Sophomore Shawn Laurent won the men’s heptathlon with a point total of 4,488. That score is a personal-best, and ranks as the second highest recorded in team history. Laurent won the 60-meter dash and long jump events. He also placed second in the high jump and third in the shot put.

Freshman Brooklyn Meinke topped the women’s pentathlon field with 3,096 points, and set new school and Fieldhouse records. Meinke won the 800-meter run, placed third in the shot put and 60-meter hurdles and fourth in the long jump.

Freshman Matt Meyeske of the men’s team, and sophomore Kaylyn Williams of the women’s team, also scored points for Johnson County in this event. Mayeske placed fifth overall accumulating a personal-best 3,990 points. Williams placed sixth overall with 2,564 points.

The main portion of the men’s and women’s championships run Fri.-Sat., Feb. 21-22 at Anschutz Pavilion on the campus of the University of Kansas. Both teams will by vying for their second region title in three years. The Lady Cavaliers will also trying for its 11th conference title all-time, while men are in search of winning the title for a 12th time.
