OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced this week the colleges achieving academic excellence for 2013-14. Each sanctioned NJCAA sport recognizes an Academic Team of the Year, and Johnson County Community College posted the top grade point average in the country in women’s tennis at 3.83. This is the program’s first national academic championship in team history.

The seven members on the squad were: Yasmine El Ghazi (Aujda, Morocco); Claire Gordon (Shawnee, Kan.); Kara Hoegerl (Baldwin City, Kan.); Jessi Holman (Wichita, Kan.); Kaitlin Jorgensen (Baldwin City, Kan.); Sarah Ong (Parsons, Kan.) and Sydney Shields (Wichita, Kan.).

In addition, Hoegerl earned a NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement Award for posting a grade point between a 3.60 and 3.79 with over 45 hours completed.

The Lady Cavaliers were led by 36-year veteran and Hall of Fame coach Glen Moser, and assistant coach Burt Walker.
