M. Basketball – Jones pours in 41 in Cavaliers win

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College sophomore guard Pat Jones put together one of the best offensive performances in team history Saturday against Hesston College at the Yost Center, leading this team to an 89-73 overtime victory. Jones blitzed the Larks defense for 41 points, tying the sixth-best single game by a Cavalier.

Jones hit 10 field goals, eight from 3-point range, and knocked down 13-of-16 free throw attempts. His eight treys were just one shy of the school record held by David Luster (2010) and Quasim Jones (2012).

Despite Jones’ huge night, Hesston managed to pull even with the Cavaliers with a minute remaining, and missed three shots to win in the final 39 seconds.

But the overtime belonged to Johnson County. Three steals in the first 1:25 of overtime led to six JCCC points. Sophomore Trevor Myers had the first two steals, and freshman Joe Young the third. Young also had a basket and two assists in that early run. Johnson County outscored the Larks 18-to-2, giving JCCC its second straight win and sixth overall.

Sophomore Preston Oakes followed Jones in scoring with 19 points, all coming in the second half and overtime. Oakes picked up two early fouls, and was on the bench most of the first half. He also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Myers hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Freshmen Donnell Bronson and Zach Nelson had solid efforts, each finishing with six points. Bronson also recorded 10 boards, and Nelson hauled in five. Young chipped in a bucket along with three rebounds and four assists.
