M. Basketball – Cavaliers let game slip away

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team let a potential victory slip away against North Central Missouri College Wednesday night at JCCC Gymnasium, suffering a 72-68 loss.

The Cavaliers, which dropped to 4-14 on the season, led by four points in 2:57 remaining in the game when sophomore Preston Oakes received a flagrant one foul while trying to keep the Pirates Jory Woodson from a break away dunk. He also received a technical foul. Woodson made all four three throws and Tyrell Therkield nailed a three-pointer on the inbounds play, one of only two made by NCMC on the night. In a matter of a few seconds, Johnson County’s four point lead evaporated into a three point deficit.

The Cavaliers got it back to a one point game on two free throws by Pat Jones with 2:41 left, but that would be the last points scored for JCCC.

Jones and Oakes led JCCC in scoring, each finishing with 22 points. Oakes also recorded 10 rebounds. Zach Nelson, Donnell Bronson and Jack Todd each contributed seven points.

Johnson County travels across town to play MCC-Penn Valley, Friday evening, and returns home to host Kansas City Kansas Community College, Wed., Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
