W. Tennis – Former JCCC All-American signs with New Mexico State

Erika Castillo Lopez

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Former Johnson County Community College tennis player Erika Castillo Lopez has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend the New Mexico State University. She will be a part of the Aggies squad beginning in the 2014-15 season.

Castillo Lopez finished the 2013 regular season ranked No. 1 in doubles in the ITA Women’s Rankings with teammate Shannon Beckett, which earned her ITA All-American. The pair finished the season with a record of 17-1. That mark ranks as the second most wins by a team in JCCC history, and their .944 winning percentage set a new team record.

Castillo Lopez also compiled a singles record of 16-3 in 2013 her sophomore year, giving her a combined 33-4 record for the season. She compiled a career singles mark of 31-8, with 26 victories from the No. 2 spot, which is a team record. In doubles, she was 31-6 over her career and her 62 career combined wins rank second all-time at Johnson County.

During her two seasons at JCCC, Castillo Lopez helped the Lady Cavaliers tennis program to two NJCAA National Tournament appearances, with a sixth place finish in 2013. Also that season, she helped the team win its 11th Region VI title, but this first since 2006.
