Golf – Cavaliers qualify for national tournament

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Playing in wet and windy conditions at Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kan., the Johnson County Community College golf team qualified for their third straight NJCAA National Tournament and 19th national appearance overall with a tie for fourth place at the NJCAA District III Championship earlier this week.

By placing in the top six, JCCC earned the opportunity to compete at the 2014 NJCAA National Championship on May 13-16 at Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa. This will be the final time JCCC will tee it up. A decision to drop the program was made in late January.

Individually, three Cavaliers finished among the top 15 golfers, including two in the top 10. Freshmen Parker Miller and Charlie Rinehart each shot 14-over 230 over 54 holes to finish in a four-way tie for ninth. Miller shot 75, 80 and 75, while Rinehart posted all three rounds in the 70s. He shot 75, 78 and 77.

Freshman Tristan Abts tied for 13th overall with a 15-over 231 total. He opened with an 80, but fought back with rounds of 74 and 77.

Rounding out the scoring for Johnson County were Logan Henrichs and Wade Hageman. Henrichs tied for 35th with a 245 total, and Hageman placed 43rd with a 249.

Indian Hills’ Colin Pearson was the individual champion, defeating teammate George Trujillo in a playoff for medalist honors.
