Baseball – Cavaliers advance to Region playoffs in Wichita

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College baseball team (44-11) advanced to the NJCAA Region VI Super-Regional Tournament by sweeping Cloud County Community College in the first round on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers outscored the Thunderbirds 27-to-7, winning 14-4 in the first game, and 13-3 in the second.

The Super-Regional will take place May 9-13, at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan. The other seven qualifiers are: Butler (36-21), Coffeyville (37-17), Cowley (36-15), Hutchinson (42-15), Kansas City Kansas (36-20) and Seward County (31-27). The winner will advance to the NJCAA World Series May 24-31, in Grand Junction, Colo.

In the game one victory, an 11-run outburst in the sixth inning spurred the Cavaliers to a 14-4 win. In the sixth, Johnson County scored on two RBI single by Riley Landuyt and Hayden Steele, an RBI double by L.J. Hatch and Shea Stine and a two-run single by Aaron Schnurbusch.

Eight of the nine player for JCCC collected at least one hit, and five had multi-hit games, including a three-hit effort by Landuyt.

Derek Hurt got the win in relief for the Cavaliers, pitching two scoreless innings.

In the second game, Johnson County took control early, plating five runs in the first three innings. The Cavaliers racked up 15 hits, led by a 4-for-5 effort by Alec Alvarez. Hatch racked up two RBI on three hits. He singled in the first and fourth innings, and tripled in the fifth.

Schnurbusch went the distance on the hill, picking up his 11th victory of the season. He allowed three earned runs and four hits while striking out three batters.
