Baseball – Cavaliers appear in first regular season poll

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The NJCAA released it first Division I baseball poll of the regular season, and the Johnson County Community College program earned the No. 28 spot nationally. This marks the sixth time in the last seven seasons they have been ranked at some point during the campaign.

This season, the Cavaliers are off to a impressive 10-2 start. They opened the season by winning 3-of-4 games against Des Moines Area, the No. 5 ranked team in NJCAA Division II. 

Individually, JCCC’s offense is led by freshmen outfielders Ben Calvano and Riley Landuyt. Calvano is hitting at a .469 clip (15-for-32) with two doubles, a home run, 15 runs and 10 RBI. Landuyt is batting .406 (13-for-32) with three doubles, a home run and eighth RBI. Sophomore Aaron Schurbusch leads the team with 13 RBI and six extra base hits. He also is 3-0 on the mound, with 1.89 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

Last year, JCCC was not ranked on the field, but did manage to have an outstanding year in the classroom, finishing fourth in the country in team GPA. Prior to last season, JCCC had a run of five straight years where they were ranked nationally for the play on the field and in the classroom.
