Ballet company from China presents The Butterfly Lovers 

The Butterfly LoversOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Shanghai Ballet will perform The Butterfly Lovers, one of its signature ballets, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Yardley Hall.

Tickets, which are $45 and $35, are available through the college box office at 913-469-4445 or online at jccc.edu/TheSeries.

The tragic ballet, based on an ancient legend, is often considered the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet. The production features elegant costumes, enchanting sets and dazzling choreography.

Butterfly Lovers crownThe ballet tells the story of Zhu Yingtai, a beautiful young woman, and Liang Shanbo, a scholar. Zhu wants to go away to school but her father frowns on that idea. Zhu persuades him to let her go disguised as a man. Once there, she meets Liang, a classmate. They fall in love but obstacles emerge.

The accomplished ballet company has pleased audiences around the world since 1979 with its interpretations of classical Chinese and Western ballets. The company's repertoire includes Swan Lake, Coppelia, The Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet. Over the years, its dancers have won 27 medals in various competitions.

The ballet has performed in many countries and regions, including Japan, Korea, France, Canada, the United States, Indonesia, New Zealand, Spain and Australia.
