Culinary team brings home gold from Costa Rica

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Johnson County Community College culinary team won a pair of gold medals at a competition held in Costa Rica in June.

The Copa Culinaria De las Americas Pura Vida International Junior Team Culinary Competition drew teams from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, Germany, Spain and the United States.

Each team prepared a cold platter for eight, and a three-course hot food meal for four. Competition rules mandated that teams use tilapia, coffee, pineapple, chocolate and sweet potatoes in their menus.

The team from Germany won the overall competition.

Members of the JCCC team were Sophie Buell of Kansas City, Kan., Delci Reimer and Sally Wilson, both of Kansas City, Mo., and Jessica Seely of Overland Park. Felix Sturmer, JCCC professor of hospitality management, coaches the team, with assistance from Edward Adel, JCCC assistant professor of hospitality management.
