OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women’s tennis program has a strong legacy of success under 34-year veteran and Hall of Fame coach Glen Moser. He has led 24 teams to the NJCAA Tournament, and captured 10 Region VI titles, but his 2013 team may be on a track to be the most successful.

The Lady Cavaliers have bolted out to an 8-0 start, including three wins over nationally ranked programs in a span of three days on their home courts. JCCC downed No. 8 Seminole State March 15 in Oklahoma City, followed by a 5-4 win over No. 5 Collin County in Dallas, Texas the 16th, and an 8-1 win at Temple College on St. Patrick’s Day.

“Our spring trip was a great success, winning five matches in five days,” Moser said. We now are just looking forward to getting some better weather and start playing some matches here.”

A large part why the team is off to such a hot start can be traced to the leadership and success of JCCC’s three returning sophomores. Shannon Beckett, Erika Castillo-Lopez and Jean Ochs play positions 1-2-3 respectively, and the three have a combined singles record of 22-2.

Beckett is perfect so far, winning all eight matches, and has only lost one set. Castillo-Lopez and Ochs are 7-1 overall. During the spring trip, Ochs became JCCC’s all-time career wins leader at the No. 3 position with 21. For her career, she is 25-2 overall playing both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

Freshman Katie Buenger leads the newcomers this year, and is off to an impressive start to her collegiate career. She is currently 7-1 overall and 7-0 at the No. 4 position. She has not lost a single game in her last five sets, and has posted eight 6-0 set victories to date.

JCCC’s No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams are also dominating opponents. The No. 1 team of Beckett and Castillo-Lopez are a perfect 8-0, and have are beating teams with an average score of 8-2. The No. 2 team of Ochs and Buenger are also 8-0 and have had just one close match, a 9-7 win over Ottawa. The other seven matches they have won by a combined score of 56-to-9.
