W. Soccer – Hughes powers JCCC to playoff win

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College freshman scoring sensation, Courtney Hughes, added another amazing chapter to her already successful freshman campaign. Hughes scored five of JCCC nine goals to lead the No. 10 Lady Cavaliers to a win over Dodge City Community College in the first round of the Region VI Playoffs. 

Hughes scored the first, third, fourth, sixth and seventh goals. She also had an assist on the final goal, giving her 11 points in the game. She also set a new team record with her fourth hat trick of the year. 

The Lady Cavaliers also got two scoring shots from sophomore Kelsey Wakefield, and single goals from sophomore Christy Tran and freshman Katie Metscher. Tran also had two assists, with along with freshman Brooklyn Meinke. 

In the semifinal round Thursday, Nov. 7, at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Johnson County (16-2-1) will face Barton Community College  (13-3-1). These two teams battled to a 2-2 tie at JCCC, Oct. 12.  Barton led 2-1 and appeared to have the win until Tran scored with just seven seconds left to play, sending the game into overtime.
