W. Soccer – Hughes nabs National POW honor

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College freshman midfielder Courtney Hughes was named as the KJCCC/Verizon Wireless and NJCAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for matches Sept. 30-Oct. 6. 

Hughes contributed on eight of her team’s 10 goals last week to lead the Lady Cavaliers to a pair of victories. In a 7-2 win over Garden City, Hughes scored four goals and assisted on one. Her assist led to the game-winning goal. Two days later she assisted on the first and third goals and scored the second in a 3-0 home win over Hutchinson. 

For the season, Hughes ranks eighth in the country with 51 points on 22 goals and seven assists. Her 22 goals scored tie for sixth in the country. 

Johnson County is stand 11-2-0 overall on the season, and ranked 14th in the NJCAA.
