W. Soccer – JCCC downs No. 1 Iowa Western

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team spoiled the homecoming festivities for Iowa Western Community College, as they downed the No. 1 ranked Reivers, 2-1 in overtime Saturday afternoon.

Just 25 seconds into the overtime period, freshman Brooklyn Meinke took a feed from sophomore Kelsey Wakefield, darted through the Reivers defense and fired a game winning shot for the Lady Cavaliers.  It the JCCC’s first win over a No. 1 ranked team in the regular season.

JCCC head coach Jim Schwab said this a big win for his program.

“With the playoffs starting in a couple of weeks, this gives the team a lot of confidence going in,” Schwab said. “Just the way we scored in overtime, and the effort they put forth to knock off the No. 1 team in the country was impressive. They played very well as a team.”

However, at the start of the game it appeared it might be a long day for the Cavaliers defense. Iowa Western freshman midfielder Nicole Gowans quickly put her team up a goal, firing a shot past JCCC keeper Janay Stone just 25 seconds after the start.

Stone rebounded, stopping all eight of the remaining shots she faced, and improved her season mark in net to 9-2-0. Johnson County is 14-2-1 overall.

Johnson County sophomore Christy Tran pulled the Lady Cavaliers even in the 51st minute, connecting on a penalty kick after being tripped inside the box.  It was Tran’s 11th goal of the season, and 33rd of her career.

The Lady Cavaliers have one regular season game remaining before the opening round of the playoffs. JCCC travels to Dodge City on Saturday, Oct. 26.
