W. Basketball – JCCC women’s basketball team earns academic honor

OVERLAND PARK, KS – The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) recently announced its top 12 honor roll for the 2012-13 academic year and the Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team finished seventh in the community college division. The Lady Cavaliers posted a team grade point average of 3.234. This marks the fourth time in five years for head coach Ben Conrad’s team to be recognized for academic excellence.

The Lady Cavaliers have also been extremely successful on the court under Conrad’s leadership, going 143-28 (.836) over the past five years, including four straight 30-win seasons. Last season, JCCC finished 30-2 and captured its second straight East Jayhawk Conference title.

“This group put a great deal of effort into being successful in the classroom,” Conrad said. “It was such a young team for them to win the Jayhawk and achieve such a lofty GPA is proof they can win on the floor and in the classroom. Coaches (Phillipe) McCree and (Jarris) Krapcha also did a great job of implementing our study table program.”

Additionally, forward Samantha Short earned the NJCAA’s Superior Award for academic achievement for posing a grade point between 3.80 and 3.99 on a 4.00 scale. She is Conrad’s eighth individual to earn national academic honors, and the 23rd all-time at JCCC.
