Volleyball – Lady Cavaliers 3-1 at JCCC tournament

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball, ranked sixth in the country, got off to a strong start to its 2013 season. JCCC finished 3-1 while hosting the JCCC Kickoff Tournament over the weekend. Two of those wins were against ranked teams, and their lone loss was to the No. 1 team in the country.

The Lady Cavaliers opened play Friday evening by downing East Central in four sets (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14), but followed with a four set loss to No. 1 Cowley (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14).  Johnson County bounced back Saturday morning with 3-0 wins over No. 20 MCC-Longview (25-6, 25-18, 25-13) and No. 5 Central-Columbus (25-17, 25-19, 25-19).

“We came out strong against East Central by serving them aggressively and swinging tough,” head coach Jennifer Ei said. “Against Cowley, we were tight. We were excited to play and them and knew it was a conference rival, so I think the emotion got in the way of playing the match. Cowley is a consistent and strong team that does not make very many unforced errors.  The second day we were much more disciplined on defense and aggressive at the net. We did a good job of playing our game and having good ball control.”

Returning all-conference hitter Preecy Seever had an impressive tournament. She hit .404 with 46 kills and a team high 13 blocks. Sophomore hitter Lori Angello hit .278 and led the team with 61 kills over the four matches. She also recorded 35 digs. Freshman Lexis Hartzog was the team digs leader with 51, followed by freshman Jordan Halsey with 43. Hartzog also had a team high six aces.

Johnson County will host Independence, Wed., Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. It is the conference opener for both programs.
