Track – Relay record falls at Iowa State

OVERLAND PARK, KS – The Johnson County Community College men’s 4x400 relay team went to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Iowa State Classic last weekend with the goal of setting a new school record.

The team comprised of Mark Sitek, Hans Pitia, Nickson Baselle and Marquel Nickens made it a reality, finishing in 3:14.78, 0:1.14 seconds better than the previous mark set in 1999 on the same track. They were the only community college team in the field, and finished ninth overall.

“We talked about it (the record) the meet before and thought it was attainable,” said JCCC assistant coach Tom Lester. “They had three solid weeks of training, and had run really well the week before at Central Missouri, which is a smaller track. That told me they were ready to run fast on a larger track in a better race with more competition.”

Sitek also posted a fourth place finish in the non-seeded 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a season-best time of 21.87.

Sophomore thrower Caniggia Raynor recorded the second-best mark in the weight throw in school history and of his career. Raynor, who set the record at the Iowa State Open last month, posted a throw of 57-6.5 to place eighth in the seeded event. Raynor owns four of the top five marks in team history.

Sophomore Matthew Loughner posted a season-best mark of 47-2.25 in the non-seeded weight throw, good for a 14th place finish, and sophomore Nickson Baselle posted a personal-best time of 1:54.70 in the 800-meters, and placed 14th overall.

On the women’s side, sophomore thrower Monet Jackson registered the fifth-best effort in the weight throw with a mark of 51-7.25, placing her 15th overall. Jackson owns all five of the top performances in the event in team history. She also finished 16th in the shot put with a mark of 39-5.75, her second-best effort this season.

Sophomore teammate, Makayla Vette, finished 20th in the weight throw with a mark of 46-1.5.
