M. Soccer – Cavaliers punch ticket to Topeka

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team moved on step closer to a shot at reaching the NJCAA D-I Soccer Championship with a 4-1 home win over Allen Community College in the first round of the Region VI Playoffs. The Cavaliers now face Coffeyville Community College, Thursday, Nov. 7 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka in one region semifinal.  A win over the Ravens would push them into the title match against the winner between Barton Community College and Cloud County Community College.

In JCCC’s first round win, Allen took the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Ben Loftin in the 13th minute. JCCC sophomore Jake Walter quickly evened the score in the 20th minute with his sixth goal of the season. Fifteen minutes later, freshman Jorge Rivero, the team’s leading scorer, put the Cavalier up for good of a feed from Walter.

Rivero iced it in the 78th minute with his second goal of the game and 16th of the season.  Sophomore Dylan Wagenbaur put the finishing touches on the game with a goal in the 83rd minute.

The Cavaliers pulled off a big come-from-behind win over Coffeyville in their earlier meeting this season. Trailing 3-0 at halftime, JCCC rallied for a 5-4 win overtime.  Walter and Rivero each scored twice in that victory.
