M. Soccer – Cavaliers open season 1-1

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team opened the 2013 season with a thrilling overtime loss at Cloud County, but rebounded for a 4-1 win over South Suburban in the team’s home opener.

At Cloud, JCCC fell behind 4-1 with just over 25 minutes left in regulation, then rallied with three goals in a 14-minute span, the final two by freshman Jorge Rivero, sending the game into overtime.

Thunderbird forward Christopher Lavery prevented JCCC from a stunning come-from-behind win by firing the winning shot just 1:45 into the extra period. It was Lavery’s third goal of the game.

Against South Suburban, freshmen Bryce McClanahan and Hugh Ebb powered JCCC to a 2-0 first half lead, and Ebb made 3-0 at the 66th minute mark. South Suburban got on the board in 81st minute, but sophomore Zach Wustefeld secured the victory with his first goal just under three minutes to play.

Sophomore Guillermo Aguilar stopped all four shots he faced to improve to 1-1-0 on the season.

Johnson County travels to face cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas, Wed., Aug. 28 at 3 p.m., then heads to Dallas for matches against Tyler Junior College (Aug. 31) and Richland College (Sept. 2).
