M. Soccer – Cardiac kids win again

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team has a flare for the dramatic this season. On Monday afternoon, Cavaliers played in its seventh overtime match of the season, which has shattered the previous high of three matches, and managed to come away with their fifth win in seven tries.

Leading scorer Jorge Rivero took a feed from sophomore Jake Walter and fired the game-winning shot just 57 seconds into the overtime period, giving JCCC a 3-2 win over MCC-Blue River.  Rivero now has 16 goals on the season, which ties for 13th in the NJCAA, and 39 total points tie for 11th nationally.

Rivero also scored the first goal in the 36th minute off a feed from sophomore Dylan Wagenbaur. That lead was short-lived as Blue River sophomore Cameron Wallace was credited with an unassisted goal after JCCC player accidently knocked the ball into the net.

Blue River took its first lead early in the second half when freshman Kye Karim scored on a redirect off a shot from the corner by Zach Feltz.

Now trailing, Johnson County began to increase its pressure up front, and in the 69th minute, freshman Bryce McClanahan knotted the game with his third goal of the season. Wagenbaur picked up his second assist of the day, upping his season total to a team high nine.
