Free throw woes lead to setback

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Free throw shooting doomed the Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team in its recent home loss to cross-town rival MCC-Penn Valley. The Cavaliers missed 15 attempts and shot just 57 percent at the line, which allowed the Scouts to escape JCCC Gymnasium with a 76-71 win over Johnson County.

Johnson County got sold production from sophomores Preston Oakes and Pat Jones, and freshman BiQuavious Sturgis, but the rest of the roster accounted for only 10 points.

Oakes led JCCC with 25 points, hitting 9-of-15 shots, and 6-of-7 at the line. Eh also seven rebounds. Sturgis followed with 22 points and team high 10 rebounds, and Jones added 14 points and five assists.

Terry Moore led Penn Valley with a game-high 29 points, and Maurice Moore followed with 20 points.

Johnson County has two home games remaining before the holiday break. They host Allen Community College on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m., and Westminster College JV on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m.
