OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College sophomore DaShawn Harden of the women’s basketball team and sophomore Caniggia Raynor of the men’s track and field team were announced as the 2012-13 female and male JCCC Athletes of the Year at the annual Athletics Awards Ceremony on April 30. In addition, sophomore volleyball player Jessica Andersen and sophomore tennis player Daniel De Zamacona were the top female and male Academic Athletes of the Year.

Harden was selected to both the NJCAA and WBCA All-America first-teams after leading the Lady Cavaliers to a 30-2 record, an East Jayhawk Conference title, and a final season No. 1 ranking. Harden averaged 14.3 points on 47 percent shooting, including 43 percent from 3-point range, to go with 4.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals. She ranked third in the conference in scoring, first in 3-point accuracy, first in free throw accuracy (.791), fourth in 3-point fields made (53) and fourth in steals. Harden reached double figures in 19 games this season, including five of 20 or more points. She averaged 22.5 points in the Region VI Tournament. Harden also became the first JCCC player to be selected as the MVP of the East Jayhawk Conference. She recently signed a national letter-of-intent with LSU.

Raynor has developed into one of the greatest throwers in JCCC track and field history. This season, he has shattered the school record for the indoor weight throw and outdoor hammer and discus. During the indoor campaign, Raynor earned second-team NJCAA All-American by placing second in the weight throw at indoor nationals. Prior to nationals, he set a conference and region meet record with a throw of 61-9.5, and earlier in the year he set the school and Fieldhouse record with a mark of 62-8.5. Raynor owns all five of the top marks at JCCC in that event. At the Emporia State Relays this outdoor season, Raynor shattered a 20-year-old record in the hammer by four inches. He finished second with a mark 186-7, breaking the previous record of 182-6. Raynor also established the fourth-best mark all-time at JCCC in the discus with a throw of 173-0. The following week at the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic, Raynor posted a new record toss in the discus of 181-7, breaking a 13-year record by 4-feet, 4- inches. He also won the event, defeating the field by nearly eight feet. Raynor is rated among the nation’s leaders outdoors in the hammer and discus.
