Golf – JCCC’s Forristal tied for lead after two rounds

Alex ForristalOVERLAND PARK, Kan.  – Johnson County Community College freshman Alex Forristal (Olathe East H.S.) enters third round play today at the NJCAA Division I Golf Championship at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, tied for the lead with Aksel Olsen of Wallace State Community College at 4-under par. He is the first JCCC golfer to either lead to tie for the lead in a national tournament, and is looking to become just the second golfer in Kansas Jayhawk Conference history to win a national title. The first KJCCC player to win a title was Robert Russell of Kansas City Kansas Community College in 1995.

Forristal matched his season’s best round to open the tournament, firing a 3-under par 69. He followed yesterday with a 1-under 71, and stands 4-under through 36 holes. On the season, he has finished in the top 10 in six of nine tournaments, including a victory at the second KJCCC Designated, Sept. 24, 2012.

Midland College leads the 24-team field with a 575 total. Johnson County is 10 shots back and in fifth place overall. The Cavaliers best overall finish is seventh at the 2005 Championship in Dodge City, Kan.

Two other freshmen are off to solid starts in their first national tournament.  Gage Scheer (Cheney, Kan.) is tied for 24th with a 147 (75-72), and Trevor Tannahill (Olathe East) is two shots back and tied for 44th with a 149 (75-74).

Sophomore Mario Funcic (Pula, Croatia), an All-American at last year’s championship, got off to rough start in the first round with a 78, but rebounded with an even par 72 and is tied for 52nd with a 150 total.

Sophomore Joey Morrisey (Pleasanton, Kan.) is tied for 76th with a 153 (77-76).
