Golf – Cavaliers open spring season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The nationally ranked Johnson County Community College golf team finally hit the links for the first time this spring, and came away with a runner-up finish at the fourth conference tournament of the season at Salina (Kan.) Municipal Golf Course. The Cavaliers, winners of the three previous tournaments, had a four shot lead after the first round, but Dodge City stormed back in the second round to post a five-shot lead over JCCC.

All five Johnson County participants finished in the top 15, and three were among the top 10. Freshman Gage Scheer led the team with rounds of 70 and 73 for a 143 total, and a tie for sixth. Sophomore Mario Funcic and freshman Alex Forristal each posted 144 scores to tie for 10th. Funcic fired back-to-back rounds of 72, while Forristal posted scores of 71 and 73.

Freshman Trevor Tannahill tied for 13th with a 145 (74-71), and sophomore Joe Morrisey tied for 15th with a 146 (70-76).

The Cavaliers travel to Emporia, Kan., for the fifth conference tournament, Monday, April 8. A victory would secure a conference title for JCCC.
