CC – JCCC harriers solid in season opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their 2013 seasons at the Bake University Maple Leaf Invitational, Saturday morning. Running in hot and humid conditions, the JCCC men posted a runner-up finish behind Southwestern, while the women’s team came away with a third place finish.

“I thought we ran really well, good opening meet,” said JCCC head coach Mike Bloemker. “Mother nature really played a role in how things went. I wanted both teams to start off easy and work their way through the field. There is a lot of talent on both teams, I’m excited to see the kids continue to develop.”

The JCCC men placed two runners in the top 10. Freshman Grant Poje led the way, placing sixth with a time of 16:49.90 over the 5k course. Sophomore Tyler Roberts crossed the finish line in ninth place with a time of 17:05.30. Sophomore Kamp Wiebe and freshman John Raines were JCCC’s next two finishers, placing 17th and 19th respectively. Wiebe posted a time of 17:36.10, and Raines was close behind at 17:44.40.

On the women’s side, only one runner placed in the top 10, but six others finished in the top 20. Freshman Paige Miller paced JCCC with an eighth place finish. She completed the 4k course in 16:42.90.

Freshmen Abi Hartzell and Sydney Simpson were close behind, finishing 13th and 14th respectively. Hartzell finished in 16:57.40, and Simpson was just under seconds back at 16:59.10.
