Sustainability Speaker Series

Sustainability speaker series looks at organic gardening, trees, drip irrigation and recycling

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Three speakers will look at outdoor sustainability practices and a fourth will recap recycling at Johnson County Community College for a spring sustainability speaker series.

The lectures will be presented on Tuesdays in February, starting Tuesday, Feb. 7. Each lecture runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the M.R. and Evelyn Hudson Auditorium of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at JCCC, 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park.

The lecture series is sponsored by JCCC’s community services division. The lectures are free and open to the public but you must register in advance using the CRN provided by calling the JCCC Continuing Education office, 913-469-2323. Speakers and their topics are:

  • Feb. 7:Let’s go organic,” Meg Mullett, Johnson County K-State Research and Extension Master Gardener. What organic means and how it can help improve soil and plant health. Mullett will share the basic rules of organic gardening and common solutions for plant and insect problems. CRN 20982
  • Feb. 14:Trees 101,” Chris Veach, Heartland Tree Alliance. Veach will outline the mission and activities of his organization as well as covering the importance of trees in a community and all aspects of tree care. CRN 20984
  • Feb. 21:JCCC Recycles More,” Michael Rea, JCCC recycling coordinator. Rea will share what faculty, staff and students are doing on campus this year to make it a better place and to make a difference for our county, our state and our planet. CRN 20985
  • Feb. 28:Drip Irrigation,” Rob Mortko, Johnson County K-State Research and Extension Master Gardener. Mortko will discuss the benefits of drip irrigation in yards and gardens. CRN 20986

Limited reserved parking will be available in the Regnier Center underground parking garage on the east side of campus.
