Summer youth programs at JCCC offer fun, learning
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Where else could you learn about fishing, soccer and sock monkeys but at Johnson County Community College’s summer youth programs?
JCCC offers a wide array of offerings for children and teens, including sports, art, theater, learning and career exploration. Registration for all classes and camps begins March 1.
Art: Visual
- The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at JCCC offers “Early Explorations” (ages 5-7) and “Contemporary Creations” (ages 8-11) classes. Students explore JCCC’s nationally acclaimed permanent collection and exhibitions in the Nerman Museum and then create original works of art in the museum’s studio classroom. A wide array of class topics are featured this summer at 10 a.m.-noon or 2-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, June 5-July 27. A special “3-D Art Week” program will be offered June 26-29 for ages 8-11 in the mornings and ages 5-7 in the afternoons. For more information, call 913-469-8500, ext. 4771. Art: Performing
- The Summer Institute for the Arts includes “Overture Chamber Music Camp” that introduces chamber music in violin, viola, cello or bass for students in grades 4-8. The camp will be from 1-4 p.m. and is offered in two sessions, June 11-14 and June 18-21.
- New this year is Japanese Taiko Drumming. Participants (grade 6-adult) will make their own practice drums and learn the basics of incorporating rhythms and choreography to play authentic Taiko drums from 9 a.m. to noon June 18-21.To for more information on either session, visit www.jccc.edu/PASArtsEducation and www.jccc.edu/youth.
- The Heartland Chamber Music Festival (for musicians ages 12 to 26) will be July 27-Aug. 4. The Heartland Chamber Music Junior Festival (for musicians age 15 and under) will be July 28-Aug. 2. Auditions for both events will be April 27-28. For more information, visit www.heartlandmusicacademy.com.
Sports
- Sports camps for youth ages 5-18 will be held weekly May 29-July 26 with options of all-day or half-day camps. Camps include baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, volleyball and tennis. Also available are camps on speed development and basic athletic skill building. After-camp activities are available for all-day sports camp participants. Youth enrichment
- JCCC Adventurers, Crazy About Learning, TALENTS, Mad Science and Summer Academy programs are for kindergarten-7th grade, Monday-Thursday, June 4-July 26, with options of all-day or half-day classes. Classes include science, veterinary medicine, space, nature, history, Chinese, reading, writing, math and art. On or after March 1, call 913-469-2323 or visit www.jccc.edu/youth to register.
- The Friday Discoveries program provides learning opportunities for children entering grades 2-7. All-day or half-day morning or afternoon classes are available Fridays from June 1 - July 27. A wide variety of reading, science, art and hands-on activities are planned each week, including June 1’s class that teaches youth grades 5-7 to make sock monkeys and June 8’s class that shows youth grades 2-4 the finer points of fishing.
- Discovery Pathways introduces junior high and high school students to many leadership and career options. Leadership Academy for youth entering grades 7-9 is offered June 25-28. “IT Girls-Women in Technology” for high school girls grades 9-11 will run June 18-20, and DNA Camp for teens in grades 9-10 will be June 4-7. JCCC is also offering Introductions to Careers in Health (ITCH) high school boys and girls grades 9-11, June 12-15.
