Debate team wins three speaker awards at UMKC
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College debate team advanced to the semifinals and won three speaker awards at the University of Missouri-Kansas City tournament Jan. 28-29.
The team of David Cuellar, Kansas City, Kan., and Patrick Solecki, Olathe, had a 4-2 preliminary round record with wins over Kansas State University, two teams from UMKC and a team from Emporia State University. In the quarterfinal round, the team defeated Emporia State on a 3-0 decision before dropping in the semifinals to the University of Central Oklahoma on a 2-1 decision.
The team also earned three top-10 individual speaking awards. Candace Villanueva, Kansas City, Kan., was recognized as the fifth overall speaker. Solecki was recognized as the seventh overall speaker, and Cuellar was awarded the eighth overall speaker.
The team’s next tournament will be at Kansas State University Feb. 18-20.
