W. Soccer - JCCC rides wind to victory
OVERLAND PARK, KS – On a blustery, warm afternoon at Johnson County Community College, Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Cavaliers came away with a 5-1, conference victory over Cowley College. With the wind at their back in the second half, Johnson County turned a tight 1-1 match into an easy victory, netting four goals. The victory upped JCCC’s season mark to 5-2-0. The loss was Cowley’s first of the season, dropping them to 3-1-0.
The Lady Cavaliers got on the board first in the 21st minute when sophomore Anne Coleman fed freshman Taylor Barlow for her first collegiate goal, but three minutes later Cowley managed to pull even. Kierstyn Legg fired a shot past JCCC goalie Janay Stone, and the half ended with the match knotted a 1-1.
The second half was all Johnson County. The Lady Cavaliers outshot Cowley 10-2, with four shots reaching the back of the net in a span of 21 minutes.
Freshman Haley O’Brien gave JCCC the lead for good in the 51st minute, and freshman Chrstianna Tran, the team’s leading scorer, made it 3-1 in the 58th minute with her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Megan Wilcox was credited with an assist on both goals.
JCCC added to its lead in the 63rd minute off a free kick 40 yards out. Sophomore Christina Szymkowsk’s boot hit the top crossbar, and fell down at sophomore Marley Sutter’s foot for her first goal of the season.
Wilcox closed out the scoring nine minutes later off feed from Barlow. It was Wilcox’s first goal of 2012, and Barlow’s first assist.
The 19th ranked Lady Cavaliers have a big battle ahead of them this weekend, as they travel to Hutchinson, Kan., to face the No. 1 ranked Lady Dragons. Johnson County leads the all-time series, 7-5-1, but Hutchinson has won three straight, and four of the last five in the series.
