W. Basketball – JCCC falls from unbeaten ranks
OVERLAND PARK, KS – The top ranked Johnson County Community College Lady Cavaliers lost for the first time this season, falling 59-56, to No. 10 Highland Community College on Saturday afternoon at Allen Field House on the HCC campus. The loss snapped Johnson County’s 25-game East Jayhawk Conference winning streak, and a 20-game win streak in the series with the Scotties. The loss drops JCCC to 10-1 overall, while Highland improved to 11-0.
Highland jumped out early on the Lady Cavaliers, and led 27-19 at halftime. The Scotties increased their lead to 12 points before Johnson County mounted a comeback. The Lady Cavaliers managed to erase that deficit and even took a three-point lead with 1:49 to play, 52-49.
Highland’s Carina Jackson knocked a contested three-pointer to tie the game shortly after, and the Scotties managed to pull out the victory in the final seconds.
Freshman guard Sameia Kendall led Johnson County with 14 points. She was 6-of-11 from the field. The rest of the team was 12-of-44. Kendall was the only JCCC player to finish in double figures scoring. Sophomore DaShawn Harden and freshman Juanita Robinson each chipped in nine points.
