W. Basketball – No. 1 Lady Cavs improve to 7-0

Kathleen BrisbaneOVERLAND PARK, KS – Intense defensive pressure and balanced scoring are trademarks for the Johnson County Community College women’s basketball program under head coach Ben Conrad. His team proved that in an 83-48 win at Hesston College, Wednesday night. For the sixth time in seven games, the Lady Cavaliers held their opponent to under 50 points, while four different players finished scoring in double figures. 

Sophomore forward Kathleen Brisbane, the team’s leading scorer through the first seven games, led the Lady Cavaliers with 18 points against Hesston, and has now scored in double figures six straight games. She hit 7-of-11 shots and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. She also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. 

Freshman Kariel Hutt also had an impressive night. She finished with 16 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor. She also had seven boards. 

Also scoring in double figures were freshman guard Timeka O’Neal and freshman Samantha Short, each pouring in 15 points. Short O’Neal was 6-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers, while Short hit 5-of-9 and all five free throw attempts. 

Freshman Juanita Robinson led JCCC on the glass, hauling in 13 rebounds. She also had five assists and three steals. 

The Lady Cavaliers take their prefect 7-0 record on the road to the East coast this weekend. They face Dean College on Friday, Nov. 30, and at Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday, Dec. 1. They return home to host Central Methodist JV on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m.
