W. Basketball – JCCC has record night against Coffeyville

OVERLAND PARK, KS – The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the country, improved to 16-1 Wednesday night, with a 91-43 victory over Coffeyville Community College. The 48-point victory is the largest in the 65-game series. The previous margin was 36 set in 1980.

Johnson County dominated in all facets of the game. The Lady Cavaliers shot 53 percent from the field and from 3-point range, while the Ravens hit only 27 and 29 percent respectively.  JCCC also outrebounded Coffeyville 51-to-28.

Five players scored in double figures for the Lady Cavaliers, led by sophomore forward Brianna Kulas. She finished with a game-high 19 points, hitting 6-of-14 shots, including a 3-pointer, and 6-of-7 free throws. She was also the game’s top rebounder with 11. Sophomore Polly Harrington followed with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting with two free throws. She also had eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Sophomore Amy Briggs hit five of her shot shots, including three treys, to finish with 13 points. She added had four boards and three assists. Sophomores Ameshia Kearney and Mary Pat Specht each added 11 points, and sophomore point guard Tanchelle Hollingsworth has an impressive effort as well, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Freshman guard Kelsey Knox, back in action after suffering a hand injury, and sophomore Kylie Cooper were key contributors off the bench. Knox finished with eight points, four assists and four steals and Coope poured in eight points as well, and was credited eight boards and two blocks.

The Lady Cavaliers hit road this weekend for a tough East Jayhawk battle against Independence Community College, also a one-loss team this season.
