Music students, faculty to perform during public concerts

Students and faculty from the Music and Theatre Department at Johnson County Community College will perform several concerts in October.

The concerts, which are free and open to the public, will take place in the Carlsen Center's Polsky Theatre. They all start at 7:30 p.m.

Here's the lineup:

Oct. 4 – The Concert Band, conducted by Professor Ron Stinson

  • Ascend by Samuel Hazo
  • The Four Winds by Timothy Broege
  • American Verse by Timothy Broege
  • Colors of Fall by Rob Romeyn
  • Instinct by Larry Clark

Oct. 5 – The JCCC Faculty Jazz Combo

  • The Midnight Express, conducted by Stinson
  • How High the Moon by Nancy Hamilton and Morgan Lewis
  • It Doesn't Mean a Thing by Duke Ellington
  • Impressions by John Coltrane
  • St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins

On Oct. 13, the choirs of Johnson County Community College will present Music's Eloquence, a concert of songs about singing, speaking and music.

JCCC's own Chamber Choir will perform several works, including the First Coronation Anthem which George Frederick Handel wrote for the festivities surrounding the coronation of King George II of England, and also will reprise Sing All, which was specially written for (and sung for) the President's State of the College Address this fall.

The six-voice vocal ensemble, MadRegalia, will present several madrigals and part-songs by composers ranging from Arcadelt to Sullivan.

In addition, students will join two faculty members, Kerri Schiflett and Alan Murray, to present further songs about the art of singing.
