Lose the Training Wheels

Fourth annual Lose the Training Wheels training camp at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Lose the Training Wheels, a program that teaches children and adults with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike, will have its fourth annual camp from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, March 14-18, at the Johnson County Community College gymnasium.

Richard Klein, an engineer from Illinois, created the program, developing adapted equipment and specialized teaching methods to help special-needs children and adults learn to ride a bike without training wheels in five days.

Benefits include peer inclusion, success at an age-appropriate activity, improved exercise opportunities, increased stamina, increased cognitive stimulation and decision-making, and the ability to participate in a family activity.

The maximum number of participants, 40, has enrolled. For more information or to enroll in next year’s camp, e-mail Dave Krug, JCCC associate professor, accounting, or call him at 913-469-8500, ext. 4764.
