Kelly Eckerman to receive JCCC’s Headline Award

Kelly EckermanOVERLAND PARK, Kan – Kelly Eckerman, news reporter/anchor, KMBC TV-9, will receive the Headline Award from Johnson County Community College’s journalism and media communications department at a reception on Thursday, April 28, at the college. The Headline Award is given to local journalists whose example serves as an inspiration to student journalists at JCCC.

Eckerman anchors KMBC 9 News at 6 and 9 p.m. Before coming to Kansas City in 1990, she worked at various stations in Iowa and Illinois.

Born in Russell, Eckerman started her journalism career as the editor of her high school newspaper. It was there she thought she would become a print journalist, but she fell into a TV career instead.

Eckerman has won multiple Emmy Awards and has also earned a regional Edward R. Murrow award for her reporting. She is winner of several state and regional reporting awards. She works with numerous charities and is the mother of two girls.
