Debate team earns second seed at tournament
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Johnson County Community College debate team competed at the Junior Varsity/Novice National Tournament held March 4-7 at Towson University in Baltimore, Md.
Ben Cuellar, Kansas City, Kan., and Tyler Kowalewski, Overland Park, accumulated a 4-3 prelimination round record with wins over teams from George Mason, James Madison and Binghamton universities and the U.S. Naval Academy. The duo qualified to elimination rounds and lost their double-octafinal round on a 2-1 decision.
Jeremy David, Overland Park, and Dalton Lawson, Tonganoxie, accumulated a 6-1 prelimination round record with wins over teams from James Madison, Binghamton, Liberty, Richmond, Towson, and Oklahoma universities. They earned the second seed of the tournament out of 50 teams. They finished as quarterfinalists.
Three JCCC debaters were in the top 10 speakers out of 100 debaters at the tournament: Kowalewski, sixth, David, seventh and Lawson, 10th.
JCCC is hosting the 36th annual National Junior Division Debate Tournament Saturday through Monday, March 12-14. The JCCC debate team will complete its season in two weeks with the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Nationals, Binghamton, N.Y.
