Arts Education Symposium

JCCC hosts arts education symposium

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Johnson County Community College Performing Arts Series Arts Education program is hosting a Developing a Vision for Arts Education symposium from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 12, in the Capitol Federal Conference Center of the Regnier Center. Breakfast and registration are from 7:30- 8 a.m.

The keynote speaker for the symposium is Sen. Stan Rosenberg (D-Mass.). Rosenberg introduced groundbreaking legislation making Massachusetts the first state in the country to call for the formation of a creativity index in public schools statewide in order to encourage and foster creativity in students.  Rosenberg will give an overview of the economic impact, integration and creativity relative to arts education.

The symposium is the culmination of a yearlong project to assess arts education in area schools, which began with a two-part survey last fall. Nine school districts from Johnson County, Kansas City, Kan., Kansas City, Mo., and Leavenworth participated. The survey was developed with assistance from the Kennedy Center, Kansas Department of Education, Kansas Arts Commission and JCCC Institutional Research.

The survey results will be a springboard for discussion examining arts education values, concerns and trends. The goal of the symposium is to assist educators in developing strategies that will preserve, protect and enhance arts education programs in their districts.

Principals, superintendents, school boards and curriculum directors of the participating schools have been invited to attend the symposium to hear the results and have further discussions about integrating learning, student success and creativity through arts education. Other invited guests include businesses, educational foundations, local and state legislators, fine arts organizations, the Kansas State Board of Education and media.
