Baseball – Soptic inks with White Sox

Jeff SopticOVERLAND PARK, KS – Johnson County Community College right-handed pitcher Jeff Soptic has signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox. Baseball America reported Soptic signed for $320,000. By singing a professional contract, Soptic turns down his scholarship offer from the University of Missouri. Last month, Soptic was selected by the White Sox in the third round with the 110th pick overall, making him the highest drafted player in JCCC history.

Soptic’s best asset is his velocity. Baseball America reports that Soptic is one of few pitchers in the 2011 draft who can light up the radar gun. He threw consistently in the mid-to-upper 90s and reached triple digits during the season. On the season for Johnson County, Soptic finished 7-6, with 58 strikeouts and a 3.50 ERA. He was 5-2 with 48 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.10. As a freshman, Soptic made 14 starts and one relief appearance. He logged 43.2 innings and struck out 48 with an ERA of just over four.

The Kansas City Royals drafted Soptic two years ago in the 43rd round out of Shawnee Mission East High School.
