Dragon boat races

Dragons on the water

Johnson County Community College’s international students can be real dragons sometimes.

Or dragon boat paddlers, anyway.

The JCCC International Club put together a team for the dragon boat races held as part of the eighth annual Dragon Boat Festival on Brush Creek in Kansas City, Mo., June 9. The team placed second, narrowly losing to a team from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The Dragon Boat Festival is hosted by the Kansas City – Xi’an Sister City Committee and the Society for Friendship with China. JCCC has a longstanding relationship with Xi’an. Each year, the college hosts a faculty member from Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, and the university’s Model UN team often visits JCCC in the spring before traveling to New York City to compete in the international Model UN competition.

Sponsors for the JCCC dragon boat team were the college’s International Club and Student Senate.

Team members were Sean Jin, team captain; Awista Sherzada, Muhammad Ibrahim Gul, Annie Lynn, Thiago Vianna Garcia, Hoi Chun Ho, Atif Malik, Shrishail Jagtap, Devon Howe, Georgia (Gina) Galanou, Toshie Urano, Jasin Wang Jr., and Patrick Yeung and Barbara Williams, co-captains.

The second place finish netted the college a $1,000 scholarship, which will be set up through the JCCC Foundation and awarded either to a JCCC student studying abroad in China or a Chinese student studying at JCCC.
