It’s never goodbye
Justin Gust reflects on studying abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico, during the spring 2010 semester.
“Mexicans use a phrase that most of us are familiar with: Hasta luego. This is translated ‘Until then’ or, more commonly, ‘See you later.’ As I left Guadalajara at the end of June, my Mexican friends and family told me while giving me many hugs, ‘It’s never goodbye, just see you later.’ This is a very true statement, as already in September I headed back for a short visit. My study abroad semester was an incredible experience that still continues today. Here is an excerpt from my blog in which I talk about my last day in Guadalajara:
‘I am excited to be going home, but sad to leave my friends and new family. I really feel like I have grown up a lot, as well as becoming a master at Spanish, in the sense of being a stronger person. Being “forced” to constantly meet new people and put myself out there on a daily basis has made me a stronger person. I feel like I can accomplish and handle just about any situation, be it in the U.S. or Mexico.
‘Yes, school here was fantastic and I learned and practiced a lot, but the real action that helped me grow was being with the people. It will be hard to leave, but at the same time life must go on back home, too. I will be different from this experience. I have changed for the better. Would I do it again? Yes! Would I recommend it to others? Yes! Study abroad has been an amazing experience, and I thank everyone who has supported me in this. I’m especially grateful to the Gilman scholarship; without receiving help, I would not have been able to have such an amazing experience as I have.’
“Since being back in the States I have found myself answering others in Spanish. I have talked with my friends in Mexico just about every day, thanks to our new communication technology. Fluency is one of the biggest things I wanted to accomplish with my Spanish, and studying abroad really helped me get to the level I am at today. The life lessons I learned from being abroad, exploring a new culture, traveling and being independent have been important for me. From my experience I do feel like a new person, a new student. I feel competent enough to figure things out on my own and how to ask for help, something living in a different country and culture will teach you.”
