Andrea Serrano

Ready to represent JCCC

Roaming the halls of JCCC during the fall 2010 semester you can find Andrea Serrano, a Shawnee Mission West High School graduate and new student ambassador for JCCC.  Serrano received the President’s Scholarship for her hard work and commitment to her education during high school and is excited to begin her college experience at JCCC.

Throughout high school Serrano was involved with the school’s yearbook and was a school photographer for two years.  She was a member of the National Honor Society for two years and an officer of the Spanish National Honor Society.  “I worked so hard all throughout high school to make good grades and be involved in many different activities,” she said. “I have never been given a gift as big as the President’s  Scholarship.  It feels great to know that people noticed all my hard work.”

At first Serrano was unsure about coming to JCCC, but after taking a tour of the campus she was confident that JCCC was the best choice.  “I was able to see where my classes would be and the environment I would be in every day and I ended up being very impressed with the school.”

The tour was so helpful to Serrano she thought being an ambassador was the type of job that she would be well suited for.  “I heard about the job from a family friend.  After talking to them, the position sounded like something I’d really enjoy.”

Serrano is seeking a degree in business management.  Working as a receptionist at the Kansas City School of Music for two years led her to take this course of study.  “I am very good with people and I love being a part of something important,” she said.  She plans on transferring to the University of Kansas to complete her degree, but wants to take advantage of the smaller class sizes and lower tuition rates before moving on to a university.
