Academic All-Americans
JCCC had a school record 19 student-athletes earn 21 Academic All America honors for 2009-2010. That total ranks JCCC second in the country. In 2006, JCCC led the nation with 16 total Academic All-American awards.
To earn NJCAA Academic All-America by Sport honors, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or better on a 4.0 scale for 45 semester hours or 60 quarter hours. Distinguished Academic All-Americans must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or better on a 4.0 scale for 45 semester hours or 60 quarter hours. Of the 19 JCCC student-athletes to qualify, six earned distinguished All-America status. Three athletes, Zack Smith of the baseball team, Crista Bechard of the women’s basketball team and Jordan Lockwood of the volleyball team, posted a grade point average of 4.0.

In addition, seven of JCCC’s teams were honored for academic excellence. The baseball team and men’s tennis teams finished fourth in the country with team grade point averages of 3.32 and 3.22 respectively. The women’s tennis team was 11th (3.15), women’s basketball team 12th (3.27), volleyball team 30th (3.27) and softball team 37th (3.19). All seven teams also finished among the top 10 in each sport’s final season poll, and six went on to finish in the top 10 in their respective national championships.
“Our student-athletes frequently note that they chose Johnson County not only for its strong athletic traditions but for its outstanding academic reputation,” said JCCC athletic director Carl Heinrich. “They realize the academic challenges that lie ahead, but understand the importance of strong academic preparation for their future careers.”
The JCCC athletic staff knows what to look for in a prospective student-athlete. To be a Cavalier is to have the determination to succeed, not only on the playing field but in the classroom as well. Balancing academic achievement with athletic success is a primary focus of JCCC athletics.
