Writing Center

Improve writing skills at Center

JCCC’s Writing Center is a free student and community support center created to assist writers with reviewing, refreshing and upgrading their writing skills. The center’s mission is to promote the college’s mission of lifelong learning and service to the community by providing an environment for nurturing independent writing; valuing progress, not perfection; and emphasizing process, not product.

Students may bring in writing assignments into the center and get individualized feedback on their drafts. Trained tutors read the essays for organization and development. In addition, students who need to work on proofreading skills may take a test that assesses their ability to find mechanical errors, or they can bring in a graded paper and tutors will help them understand their mistakes. Handouts, resource manuals and computer software are also available to help students discover the best format and organization for their writing.

The Writing Center also offers a Grammar Hotline that helps writers, both students and community members, with spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage questions. Staff use  a variety of resources to research the answer and to give the caller an accurate reply. The hotline phone number is 913-469-4413.

An online writing lab (OWL) specifically targets distance learners. Since distance learners usually don’t come to campus, tutors will help via e-mail by posting feedback at the end of the student’s text on what was written well and offer suggestions on what could be improved.  More information on submission is available from the Writing Center.
