Golden Girl dances through life

Brittany Watson is literally dancing through life. She has been dancing for 17 years, fine-tuning her pirouettes and arabesques, perfecting her balance and alignment, and improving her technique and timing. Dance is a part of her day-to-day life, and she takes it with her everywhere she goes, even to college. And for someone as talented as Watson, being a good dancer pays off well.

Watson is co-captain of the Golden Girls dance team at Johnson County Community College – an accomplishment she is very proud of. Her talent and love for dance earned her one of 12 available dance scholarships.

“The advantages of attending JCCC classes are that you have more one-on-one time with your teachers.  They help you out as much as possible, answer any questions that you have thoroughly, and keep you staying focused throughout the year,” she said.

During her time with the Golden Girls, Watson and her team have received many awards and had the opportunity to travel to various dance competitions. At the United Performing Association (UPA) competition in Minneapolis, she won two first-place awards and third-place for a duet with team member Chrissy Birkholz. The team came back with several awards and made the college proud.

Watson won’t take all the credit for her accomplishments, though. “My coach, Erin Fine, has had such an impact on me. She has taught me to push myself, never give up and go for my goals.  If it weren’t for her I probably wouldn’t be where I’m at today.”

However, Watson does acknowledge that she’s worked hard for her accomplishments. “Making the dance team and becoming co-captain is my greatest success of the year because it was exactly what I wanted and I accomplished it,” she said. “I wanted to be involved with my school and represent it in a good way and at the same time lead my team the best that I could.”

“After JCCC I do want to continue to dance,” Watson adds. “I’m not sure where, but I don’t plan on giving up dancing anytime soon! I am considering being a dance instructor for a school or even a studio and maybe one day even opening up my own studio.”

Watson will be dancing for JCCC for another year before she graduates with an associate of general studies degree.
