Math Resource Center

Math Resource Center at JCCC

Any student enrolled in a course offered by the JCCC math department may use the Math Resource Center, located in 212 CLB.

Math tutors circulate throughout the MRC offering free assistance with math problems. Students may spend as much time in the center as they need. Students who want to work on their math without disturbance can use the MRC quiet room. Nine carrels are available, allowing students to be near the assistance and resources of the MRC, yet work in a quieter atmosphere.

Groups of three or more students may request to use one of the MRC group study rooms to study math together. Reservations may be made in advance or on an impromptu basis.

The MRC computer lab is a discipline-specific lab to be used only for mathematics. Tutorial programs are available for several classes in addition to programs on symbolic manipulators and graphers, such as Mathematica, Derive and Converge. The statistical software Minitab is available as well. Academic Systems/Plato, Hawkes Learning Systems and MyMathLab are available on the MRC computers for students who are required to use those programs in their math classes. Technical assistance is available from the lab assistant, and mathematical assistance is available from the MRC tutors and director.

The Math Resource Center also has available DVDs and CDs that cover nearly every mathematics class taught at JCCC as well as a copy of the current textbook and textbook solution manuals for JCCC mathematics courses. Many mathematical references, including mathematics encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodicals and history of math books, can be found in the MRC professional library. A problem-solving strategies handout and bookmark are available to help students become aware of a variety of learning tools. Each person learns in a unique way, and it is empowering for students to learn how to take advantage of their individual strengths.

In addition, there are DVDs on the use of Texas Instruments graphing calculators. TI calculator notes are available that describe procedures for basic use, graphing, working with matrices, and using the statistical and financial aspects of the calculators.

The MRC also has profiles for all JCCC mathematics instructors. These profiles include information about the instructors themselves, their teaching styles and their expectations. Students are encouraged to read the profiles so they can choose instructors who most closely fit their own learning styles and needs.
